About the work
This concerto is biased towards virtuosity for the whole ensemble rather than treating the orchestra merely as accompaniment. The solo clarinet remains central, but the percussion and wind players also have suitably challenging material.
There are several hidden references to archaeological misdemeanours, hence the title Palaeography: the study and deciphering of ancient writing and manuscripts.
